Japan is a place where tradition and artistry thrive, and during my last trip, I immersed myself in the world of calligraphy. Each discovery added a new dimension to my creative practice. Here are the most memorable calligraphy supplies I brought back:
Calligraphy Brushes and the Kuretake Brush Mat/Case
Finding the perfect calligraphy brush is like discovering a trusted creative companion. I picked up several beautifully crafted brushes made from natural hair, each designed for different calligraphy styles. To keep them safe, I also bought the Kuretake Brush Mat, which doubles as a protective case. Its thoughtful design ensures my brushes stay organised and ready for use wherever inspiration strikes.

Sumi Ink Stick
Grinding a Sumi ink stick is a meditative ritual that deepens my connection to the art of calligraphy. I found a traditional ink stick adorned with intricate carvings, transforming ink-making into a mindful process. The richness of the ink it produces is unmatched, lending depth and character to every stroke.

Sumi Ink Stone
Alongside the ink stick, I invested in a finely crafted Sumi ink stone. Its smooth surface allows for effortless ink grinding, creating a velvety ink that flows beautifully on paper. This tool is not just functional—it’s a piece of art in its own right.

Travel Sumi Ink Set with Brush and Stone
While exploring a tiny art supply shop in Kyoto, I found a compact travel Sumi ink set complete with a brush and mini ink stone. It’s perfect for on-the-go creativity, ensuring that even while travelling, I can immerse myself in calligraphy practice.

Cast Iron Paperweights
Calligraphy demands stability, especially when working with delicate papers. I discovered elegant cast iron paperweights shaped like leaves and traditional symbols. They add both beauty and practicality to my workspace, keeping my paper secure while enhancing the atmosphere of my creative sessions.

Pigments in Powder Form
In SEKAIDO, I came across powdered pigments in stunning, vivid hues. These natural pigments can be mixed into custom inks or paints, offering limitless creative possibilities. Their intensity and versatility make them a cherished addition to my calligraphy toolkit.

Kuretake Gansai Paints
Lastly, I couldn’t resist a set of Kuretake Gansai paints. Known for their rich, opaque colours, these traditional Japanese watercolours work beautifully for both calligraphy and artwork. Their luminous finish adds an expressive flair to my calligraphy pieces.

Each of these supplies is more than just a tool—they’re pieces of Japanese heritage, embodying craftsmanship and tradition. They inspire me to approach my calligraphy practice with reverence and creativity. My trip to Japan wasn’t just an exploration of a new culture; it became a journey into the heart of artistic expression.
